What is the difference between SFP 10G LRL and SFP 10G LR++?

SFP 10G LRL (lite version LR 1.4km), SFP 10G LR++ (enhanced versions or 15-20km/30km versions) are all SFP 10 Gigabit Ethernet optical modules, mainly used for single mode fiber long-distance transmission. Their main differences lie in transmission distance, packaging technology, and application scenarios.

The following is a specific comparative analysis:

SFP 10G LRL (10G Lite / Light LR)

CPRI & 10GBASE LR Lite SFP+ usually refers to “lightweight” or simplified 10G LR opitc modules (Limited Range), with a transmission distance of 1-2 km, belonging to the low-cost version of LR.

  • Distance: 1.4km for single mode fiber.
  • Application: Used for interconnection between campus networks and data centers with shorter distances than standard single mode fiber connections (10km), it is a more cost-effective solution than standard LR.
  • Advantage: Lower cost compared to standard LR.

SFP 10G LR++ (Enhanced / Extended LR)

SFP 10G LR++ usually refers to enhanced modules with stronger performance than the standard 10G LR optic (10km), often referred to as the low-end version of 10G ER (Extended Range), or specifically labeled as “LR++”.

  • Distance: Single mode fiber can reach up to 20km, 30km, or even further, exceeding the 10km standard of ordinary LR.
  • Application: Access to metropolitan area networks (MAN), connection to base station equipment (BBU, RRU), and long-distance transmission across campuses.
  • Advantage: Higher transmission power and higher receiving sensitivity.

How to choose Transceiver SFP 10G LRL or LR++?

The commonly way is to choose SFP+ transceivers according to your project budget, fiber type, transmission distance, and existed optical link device.

  • ≤300m: Choose SR or LRM (multimode environment).
  • ≤2km: Choose LRM2 or LRL to save costs.
  • About 10km: Choose standard LR.
  • 10km-30km: Select LR++/ER.
