SFP 10GBASE LRM and 10G LRM are both 10G multimode SFP modules, their difference mainly lies in the transmission distance and supported fiber types. SFP 10G SR (short distance) is suitable for data centers, achieving cost-effective transmission over short distances of 300m-400m through OM3/OM4 multimode fiber. 10G LRM (Long Range Multimode) is designed specifically for older versions of FDDI multimode fiber and can achieve up to 220m-300m transmission on older fibers. It has stronger compatibility than 10 G SR, but slightly higher power consumption and cost.
Transmission Distance
- 10G SR (Short Range): Suitable for extremely short distances, capable of transmitting 300-400m over OM3/OM4 multimode fiber.
- 10G LRM (Long Reach Multimode): With a longer transmission distance, it can usually transmit 220-300m on OM1/OM2/OM3 multimode fibers, and can meet special requirements up to 2km.
Fiber Compatibility
- SFP 10G SR: mainly used for new OM3 and OM4 multimode optical fibers.
- SFP 10GBASE LRM: Compatible with old versions of FDDI grade OM1 and OM2 multimode fibers, very suitable for upgrading old networks.
Technology & Wavelength
- 10GB SFP SR : Using 850nm wavelength and low cost VCSEL laser.
- 10GB LRM: using 1310nm wavelength and DFB laser, the main advantage is that it can overcome modal dispersion in old optical fibers.
Application Scenarios
- SFP+ LC SR: Interconnection between switches and servers within the data center.
- SFP 10GB LRM: Enterprise network upgrade, upgrading the 10G network in an environment where old multimode fiber has already been laid.
