How to choose the DAC cable length and AWG wire diameter?

The smaller the AWG number, the thicker the corresponding cable diameter, and the longer the transmission distance. Below are recommendations for commonly used transmission distances and their corresponding wire diameters:

✅When using Intel network cards, if choosing a 3-meter twinax SFP cable, a 26AWG thick cable is required; otherwise, unstable connections may occur. For lengths less than 3 meters, a 30AWG thin cable can be used.

✅When interconnecting with Cisco switches, a 5-meter length of 30AWG thin cable can be used. This is because Cisco incorporates sufficient compensation design in its switch chips, significantly reducing the cost.

  • 30AWG (Finest): Suitable for short distances (0.5m-1.5m), the wire body is soft and easily bent, which is very conducive to high-density wire management and heat dissipation inside the cabinet.
  • 26AWG (Medium): Suitable for medium distances (1.5m-2.5m), achieving a balance between signal structure and line hardness.
  • 24AWG (Thickest):suitable for long distances (3m), with a harder and heavier body, but can provide excellent signal integrity.
