It encapsulates the optical splitter chip in a sturdy ABS plastic box and leads out thick 2mm or 3mm fiber optic pigtails. It is generally not used separately but in FTTx, GPON cross cabinets, optical distribution boxes, wall mounted boxes, machine room rack interconnection, and monitoring systems.
